On Halloween, the Gophers qualified for state at their sectional meet in Marana. Every runner ran the fastest race they’ve ever ran up to that day, placing our team fifth. Abel Renteria ran his 16:26 that day, finishing fifth as an individual. Hanna Hall was the only Lady Gopher to qualify that day, also running her all-time best of 20:21. Alexis Bever-Davis missed qualifying individually by one place, and though our girls all ran personal bests that day, we were too far out of team qualifying standards this time. Look out for next season though, as the Lady Gophers have no seniors to graduate!
Florence boys finished 13th out of 26 teams at state. Injuries and other obstacles held us back from besting our top ten finish from 2014. That being said, returning boys state runners Abel Renteria and Joseph Kish beat their previous state time by more than a minute. (Every other boy set their course p.r., as they were running it for the first time.) Hanna Hall, the lone Lady Gopher to represent us this fall, bested last year’s time by 36 seconds,.. placing herself in the top 23% of the racers on the day. Renteria placed highest for the guys, taking 27th out of 191 runners (top 14% of state racers that day).
Gopher Runners: We know what we do and who we are. We take pride in every stride, and because we run together, we can run far. Thank you for the great season Gophers. We are proud of you.
